The Passion of the Brunette

The model in this series could be the subject of a devotional painting. With her long brown hair falling over her naked body, she seems to be having some kind of religious experience — brought on by contact with the divine, or perhaps by the person at the other end of the arm that occasionally reaches into the frame.

Mexican-born photographer Raul Hofer Torres likes contradictions like sexy piety. "As a child without a male figure while surrounded by females in a macho-oriented Latin American and European culture, I was raised with a contradiction of ideas and values," he writes on his website. "Do I want an independent and secure woman? Or must I feel needed and be the protector?"

This series suggest he's having an awfully good time sorting it all out. — Ada Calhoun
