Is This PETA Ad Comparing Women To Whales?

peta-save-the-whales

This Jacksonville, Florida billboard for the People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals is bringing the organization ire from even its strongest supporters...

Honestly, what purpose does this billboard serve except encourage offensive comments about a person's weight? It certainly isn't going to convince anyone to go vegetarian, in our opinion. Bloggers all over the country second that:

I know I shouldn't be surprised by PETA's latest billboard campaign in Florida - after all, their brand of activism has proven to be sexist and racist time and time again - why not fat-shaming to boot? (Part of me hates posting this at all because it does just give PETA the attention that they want...) [Feministing]

The Center for Consumer Freedom [and others call] the new billboard "mean-spirited, cruel, and ugly." [Oregon Live]

I was planning on taking [my family] to the beach to enjoy the beautiful day when I saw a billboard that made me want to cry. ...We all sat there and stared at it for a minute and everyone in the car was silent. No one wanted to mention my weight. [Deceiver]

What do you think?

I actually think it's good. Obesity is a huge problem in the US (no pun intended) as is cruelty to animals. Sometimes people need a kick in the c*nt to get up off their arse. If this billboard works on even one person and gets them to eat healthier and lose weight it's worth insulting others as far as I'm concerned.

Honestly, it's a non sequitur. I've lost 40 pounds this year and I've been eating meat the whole way. Lean proteins like chicken, steak, and fish are great for keeping you satisfied while in a caloric deficit. The key to losing weight isn't forgoing meat, because almost all junk food is vegetarian. That's what makes this ad so perplexing and insulting not just to overweight people but to their intelligence as well.

Did you really just call steak a lean protein?

I think it's an excellent ad! I couldn't think of better one! It's funny and tackles two major issues in today's society! GO PETA!

Bloody stupid Peta and their lies! . Going Vegan is not the most healthy diet you can have. Sure vegans are healthier than most, but that is because most people have a really poor diet. It is about being conscious what you eat.

Going vegan or vegetarian is not going to make you slim. In fact I have been fat all my life. I have been vegetarian for 20 years and vegan for a large chunk of that. I did not loose any weight from being vegan.
But I did develop intestinal problems, so seriously I had to go to the hospital several times. They could not find the source.
The problems stopped when I went on a diet of fresh veg with some animals and no dairy. And I lost weight.

I was always conscious about food. Did all the fun recipies in the PETA books. But I got sick. And I was not the only one.

Going vegan is something you do for the animals. And that is cool and that is ok. We do not need to be lied to, to want to become vegan.
Everybody in t he vegan scene and especially in Peta ( I used to be active in Peta europe) is just repeating what other people in the scene say. Without being critical. It is like a fucking religion.
A few times a friend and I tested the information flow by feeding false health claims. Sure enough they came back to us as facts in a matter of days.

Go Vegan! Go Vegetarian, for the animals, not your own health.

Almost all junk food is vegetarian?! I'm a vegetarian and I'll assure you that is not true! A small percentage of junk food is suitable for vegetarians (if it hasn't been deep fried in animal fat) and then it's usually the healthiest option.. EG Margherita pizza compared to a meaty one, or veggie burgers compared to beef burgers or donner meat..

I agree that you can be very healthy while eating meat, if you eat the right sort, but the aim of this advert isn't "Lose weight while eating our planet's animals: it is possible!"
Congratulations on the 40 pounds by the way :)

Ice cream sundaes, Twinkies, cookies, cake, candy bars, French fries, potato chips, soda, beer, doughnuts, pasta, mozzarella sticks, nachos: all vegetarian. Even the Bloomin' Onion at Chili's -- which is usually ranked the highest-calorie appetizer at any chain restaurant -- is vegan.

I'm not saying the ad should say "Lose weight while eating animals," because obviously PETA would never promote that message. I'm saying PETA shouldn't be giving dietary advice in the first place. The insults to overweight people, and fat women in particular, are just the cherry on top.

Icecream, most cookies, most cakes and candy bars, mozerella sticks and nachos have dairy and eggs in them. That's what makes them unhealthy. Also the ungodly amounts of refined sugar. But then again refined sugar isn't what nature intended. Think more critically next time.

She said vegetarian, not vegan... There is a difference.

After being a strict vegetarian for 16 years I started eating fish again and immediately started losing weight. Obesity is most certainly an epidemic in this country, but vegetarianism is not an easy way to lose weight for most people. There are so many persuasive ethical, environmental and health reasons to go vegetarian, but somehow PETA's asshattery makes it seem like a stupider idea every time they come up with a new ad campaign.

Suppose my argument is different as I live in England(sorry, I should have said this upfront), but most vegetarians here are much healthier, and much thinner, and more aware of how to eat a healthy diet.. The stereotypical meat eater here will eat tonnes of processed meat, takeaways, and junk food, whereas the typical vegetarian will cook more fresh food as it's harder to buy vegetarian meals..

The only person I know that's a vegan is really fat and ironically she is a peta person. LOL I love it! Go meat!

What is wrong with this country? Nobody is "hating on" fat people. Fat people are fat. That is a fact. Just because nobody says your fat, if you are 440 lbs, you ARE fat!

I doubt fat people want to be fat, which is why they feel bad when their weight is pointed out. So if eating healthy helps them become not fat (which they probably want), it's a win-win.

Now you say something
