If You're Sick of Being Single, Blame Your City

YourTango has an interesting take on the whole "single in the city" phenomenon and how we're heading ever closer to an idiocracy. Damn it, people, it's all this moneymaking that's killing our ability to stay committed to somebody else, as we've been saying for years...

From the article:

"In a lot of cities where professional status really matters, people focus on their careers, valuing their jobs over quality of life—things like relationships, marriage and kids get put on the back burner," says Ian Kerner, Ph.D., sex therapist and relationship counselor and author of Passionista.  In cities, "there is a higher proportion of eligible, interesting people, so the need to settle down doesn't feel as much as a priority.

Says Eric, 28, a literary agent... "I'm very picky and will focus on what I don't like about someone because I know there is the potential to meet someone else who may have everything I do like. By living in a big city I knew my odds were better."

We're all a bunch of brats, spoiled by the eye candy that's passing by... not like in the 50s, where we married our sweethearts because, well, we never saw anyone purtier. Will we ever be grateful for what we have?

"If you're living in a large city with lots of single people, you have to narrow the playing field. Go places where you'd like to find a like-minded person with the same values or hobbies as you. Visit art shows, take tennis lessons, go to parties that your coworkers invite you to." [YourTango]

Those of you in relationships-- how have you been able to get one, retain it, and make it work in a large and overwhelming city?

In what city does "professional status" not matter? Where do people value their quality of life over their job?

There are lots of places where people value their quality of life over their job...seriously. Small towns in Iowa and the like.

Funny. I always thought that the quality of my job was part of the quality of my life. I am living while I am at work, but maybe that's just me and my small town ways.

I personally rather live in a big city, even if alot of people value their career over their social life. I will find somebody to my liking (interest and look wise) in a big city than settling for less in a small city.
