Anderson Cooper Drops Camera to Save Injured Boy

Believe it or not, I've actually seen some people who are offended by this disregard for journalistic protocol. Somehow, I don't think this breach of code is going to bother most people, but maybe I'm wrong. It's certainly a longstanding debate - where should the remove of an unbiased reporter end in favor of the demands of simple humanity? What situations require journalists to become more than impartial observers? And what does that interaction mean for the report or the reporter himself? In the grand scheme, important questions all.

Of course, Anderson decided to just get his superhero on and not give a shit about those questions, to which I give a hearty "Fuck yeah!" I should warn you, the video below is pretty graphic, but I do think it is worth it to see just a glimpse of what's happening in the wake of the earthquake (and the silver-haired good deeds):

And then, apparently, SanJay Gupta performed emergency brain surgery on a dying baby girl in an airline hangar. Which is actually the most badass thing that I have ever heard of in my whole fucking life. It actually makes me want to quit my job and go to medical school.

Actually, I have been OFFENDED by the lack of involvement/impartialness of the media. I've often thought, reporting should be secondary. If you are standing in the rubble, you ought to be digging, not holding a camera.

I've always had the hots for the Silver Fox, but this has deepened my love affair!

Human first, journalist second. I like that. (HST would be proud.)

The folks with cameras standing in the rubble bring the images that bring the dollars that brings more help than any one pair of hands could provide. Without journalists we wouldn't even know about what's been going on in Haiti.
But in any case, I doubt many real reporters would argue that AC did the wrong thing by dragging a kid to safety.

Wait, Sanjay Gupta actually performed *actual medicine*? He didn't just flog fad diets and bash the uninsured for their laziness? Fuck me!

I worked as a firefighter at the DNC and Anderson Cooper sent out lunch for 15 of us. Was the hightlight of some long days.

@J: Gupta is a world-class neurosurgeon. He declined to be Obama's Surgeon General because it would have meant that he'd be away from neurosugery so long that he would not be able to go back to it. This is a guy who has made a career of saving lives -- and is a self-promoter and well compensated, but compared to all the other highly paid self-promoters, Gupta actually delivers something worthwhile.

I am sure more than one combat reporter has pulled an injured soldier out of the immediate line of fire. This can't be the first time, and probably will not be the last.
