The Oscar Nominations Are In...

That "ten Best Picture nominees" thing ends up looking just as dumb as you imagined it would.
Overall, there weren't too many surprises - you can read the complete list here. And since the big show isn't for another month, and I hate waiting, I decided to give out a few of my own awards right now.
Best Performance Recycled from Designing Women:
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side, nominated for Best Actress
Most Deserved:
Many-way tie between Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Christoph Waltz, Kathryn Bigelow, Up, actually a lot of others.
Headline I'd Most Like to See But Won't:
"Kathryn Bigelow and Ex-Husband Both Nominated for Best Director" - because if we must keep reminding everyone that Bigelow and James Cameron were once married, the least we could do is change it up a bit and start defining her a her own person and not just Cameron's ex-wife.
Best Recreation of a Rave:
Avatar
Best Screenplay Including the Words "Lubricated Horse Cock":
In The Loop (Woo!)
I have to say, I'm rather pleased with the list. There aren't too many surprises, but I wasn't expecting many. As far as the Oscars go, I think this is a pretty decent year. So tune in Sunday, March 7, for the inevitable disappointment when The Blind Side wins Best Picture. That howling you'll hear will be me, flinging myself off the nearest rooftop.

I had the same reaction to all those "James Cameron and ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow" lines.
I didn't notice that the media wasn't letting Kathryn Bigelow be her own person. Are any outlets referring to Cameron as Bigelow's ex-husband?`1
Up and Hurt Locker are the two best movies of the year. Glad to see both nominated. Of course, with 10 best picture nominations, it's a surprise Paul Blart: Mall Cop wasn't nominated.
The Cove definitely deserves best documentary.
Not a thing for "The Hangover?" Really!?! The academy is a bunch of stuffy, in-bred losers.
I'm happy to see District 9 nominated. It won't win--and doesn't deserve to (go Hurt Locker or a Serious Man!)--but it basically accomplished what Avatar needed $250 million for with only a fraction of the cost ($30 mil, I believe).
Also, here's to Coraline or Fantastic Mr. Fox upsetting Up. Sorry, Pixar...
Christopher Waltz?
ha. making that point doesn't quite work if i end up misspelling the name, too. damn. i meant christoph waltz, of course. but then, i'm not writing for this site now, am i?
at least you got ms. sidibe right. much easier to spell, for sure.
