Here’s a really lousy way for dating sites to ensure its users find their mates: prevent people from even seeing your profile if the site deems them comparatively unattractive. Seriously, if this OK Cupid e-mail is to be believed, they are actually ensuring "more attractive people [appear] in your match results," which likely also means the less attractive people won’t be shown you.
According to The Consumerist, the mass e-mail reads like so:
We are very pleased to report that you are in the top half of OkCupid’s most attractive users. The scales recently tipped in your favor, and we thought you’d like to know…
Your new elite status comes with one important privilege:
You will now see more attractive people in your match results.
This new status won’t affect your actual match percentages, which are still based purely on your answers and desired match’s answers. But the people we recommend will be more attractive. Also! You’ll be shown to more attractive people in their match results.
After mulling this over, I’m thinking that OK Cupid did absolutely nothing whatsoever to its site. No limiting of search results, no hiding of sexy profile pictures for the uglies. This is purely to make people think OK Cupid is looking out for its members — or however you want to put this. In any case, they still suck.
(There’s another way to tell: is anyone reading this on OK Cupid and did not receive this e-mail?)
