HBO’s New Scripted Sex Show: ‘I’ve Never Had An Orgasm’

mara altman authorHBO’s latest addition to its endless history of decent shows about sex ("Hung," "Taxicab Confessions," etc.) is going to be based on a memoir, Thanks For Coming: One Young Woman’s Quest For An Orgasm, by Mara Altman, at least according to internet rumor.

[T]he book — and presumably the show — tells how Altman (the daughter of sexually liberated parents) lost her virginity at 17 and slept with a bunch of guys, but had still never experienced “the big O.” In her quest for an orgasm, she visited an “orgasm commune” and masturbated for doctors inside an MRI machine. “I’m very excited about the prospect of HBO adapting my book for a comedy series,” Altman, a former staff writer for The Village Voice, told Deadline Hollywood. “It’s not everyday that a dysfunctional vulva gets to move out of marginalization and into the limelight.” [The Frisky]

Side note: Did anyone read the book? Did she really have a dysfunctional vulva? And, not to ruin anything (obviously, any book like this is going to have a happy ending, so to speak), but did she ever have an orgasm… with someone else? From her interview here, it appears that only after much stimulation from gurus and devices and whatever was she able to achieve any feeling at all. That doesn’t sound like she is any better off than when she started — probably still unable to get herself off and almost certainly unable to get off during sex — even if she did achieve her original goal, which was to get off and know what it felt like.

All right, back to the pilot — I think this works better as a television show than Hung or many of the other sex shows that have been attempted. There’s just more at stake here than a prostitute and his big dong being unhappy.
