Beck, Thurston Moore and Tortoise To Cover A Yanni Album

 Beck

Damn you, Beck! As you may know, Beck and his many talented musician friends like to get together and make weird music in their little Record Club group – just to show you that they can. And now this includes a cover of a Yanni album from twenty years ago.

Beck couldn’t have picked better collaborators to cover Yanni’s Live at the Acropolis than Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and the jazzy weirdos of Tortoise. Plus, I have a feeling Beck really likes this album. For all his musical cutting-and-pasting and his out-there sense of humor, I get the sense he’s a super genuine guy that would never cover any kind of music out of some mean-spirited sense of irony. (Unlike the rest of us.)

Live at the Acropolis was just a big-ass instrumental live album, and if anyone can take this and turn it on its head with some guitar feedback, mumbly vocals, computer bleeps (possiby some screaming in Spanish?) it’s those three. Here’s their cover of Yanni’s "Santorini" from their upcoming album. Below that is Yanni’s original version, you know, for reference.
