Warner Bros. just released the trailer for Ben Affleck’s second film as a director, The Town. As the studio is eager to note, it’s from the director of the solid Gone Baby Gone, not from the charismatic star of Reindeer Games, but however you choose to ID its creator, The Town is clearly an Affleckian work. Local color? Check. Great cast (in this case, the lovely Rebecca Hall, the lovely Jon Hamm, Chris Cooper, The Hurt Locker‘s Jeremy Renner, Gossip Girl‘s Blake Lively, and that Affleck guy)? Check. Convoluted crime-drama plot teetering on the edge of plausibility? Check, but if Gone Baby Gone‘s any indication, Affleck’s pretty good at keeping you engaged in his melodramas. (Actually, the same probably applies to the script he and Matt Damon wrote for Good Will Hunting; a lot about it strains credulity, particularly the bogus depiction of therapy, but nobody walked out in the middle, right?) One concern: tabloids suggest that Affleck felt otherwise, but in the "trampy Bostonienne" role, Blake Lively is a downgrade from Gone Baby Gone‘s Amy Ryan. Then again, almost anyone would be. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think in the comments.
