Comic Con is off to a running start. Right after the Tron panel (the trailer will blow your ever-loving mind), del Toro announced he’ll be directing a new The Haunted Mansion movie.
Yes, as in the Disney ride. Yes, as in the Eddie Murphy flop from 2003. But as del Toro put it in front of a crowd of fans, "We are not returning Eddie Murphy’s calls." Damn.
Is this why del Toro turned down The Hobbit? To direct a movie that was already made about a Disney ride? What could have possibly compelled him?
"Disney is one of the creators of some of the scariest images in my childhood. People forget that he not only made sweet images but also images of nightmare. We need to honor that side of the legacy."
(Lest us forget the other part of Disney’s legacy). The director later added that he rides The Haunted Mansion to clear his head whenever he’s depressed. Is directing The Haunted Mansion the strangest catharsis we’ve ever heard of? It might be. But it will probably be a great kids’ movie, too.
