Today – as you surely know by now – is the forty-ninth birthday our (still so young) President. In an age where partisan sniping threatens to render our political mechanisms completely and utterly useless, it was nice to see that the GOP got the president a gift.
BaracksBirthdayCards.com – a site set up by the Rebublican National Committee — allows anyone to select and send an e-card to Obama. The cards all feature the mugs of various politicians with snarky quotations intended to poke fun at the President’s political slip-ups.
I’m all about everybody having a sense of humor — a little bit of elbowing from political rivals should be able to be taken with a grain of salt, right? Maybe. In this political climate, where personal attacks, birthplace rumors, and mean schoolyard gossip seem to have more clout than actual debate, there seems to be something a little sinister here, too. Only one of the cards actually references anything vaguely political (the last one), the rest are all of the "he’s an elitist / Kenyan" camp.
Viewed as a harmless joke or not, it does make me wish for a political culture where politicians — with at least lip-service to mutual respect — disagreed on actual things, instead of dumb schoolboy pranks.
