Nerve Video Feature: The Cooler

tarring William H. Macy and Maria Bello as two unlikely lovers in Vegas, The Cooler contains one of the grittier depictions of sex we’ve seen in a while. So gritty, in fact, that it rankled the MPAA, which rated the film a commercially buzzkilling NC-17. The filmmakers appealed, reviving the debate about the ratings system and its effect on sexual honesty in film.

What’s exciting from our perspective is that ever-bigger stars — such as Macy, Mark Ruffalo (In the Cut) and Chloe Sevigny (the as-yet-unreleased Brown Bunny) — are starting to go further onscreen. Here’s a sneak preview of a scene from The Cooler, which is now rated R and opens nationwide today.
