Reader Feedback on "The Nerve Interview: Hanif Kureishi"
Ooh, imagine learning writing from Hanif. I want to emigrate right away.
Great interview, thank you. -- 01/17 |
After reading this interview, I just want to respond to one of Kureishi's statements: "I don't think any of us really believe in the idea of the soul anymore, of there being a part of our human frame that is our essence. A human being is composed entirely of memory, physical appearance, and what one believes others will make of one's physical appearance." I must say that I completely disagree. It's possible that our definition of "the soul" has changed, or is in the process of changing, but I know that there are people, or at least one person, who believes in an essence that is unique, but is also what all living beings have in common. I believe it's the source of empathy. It is not a part of the human frame in the physical sense, which is what separates it from our bodies. If memory is part of the composition of a human being, then the memory of the soul and other lives lived is one of the most important elements of the human being. --SM 02/25 |
