Reader Feedback on "The Nerve Interview: Mary Gaitskill"
That was a terrific, sensational, really interesting interview with Mary Gaitskill; I wasn't familiar with her literary work until now, although of course I've seen Secretary.
Speaking of which, I think she was being too dismissive of fans of the movie, as if it was such a homogenized version of her story that it couldn't appeal to genunine deviants or something.
Some of us sexy fanatics like a gloss of soft-pedaled Hollywood production framing our sleaze. That doesn't make us all shallow dilettantes. As much as I love Henry Miller, I appreciate the gauzy, calculated sweetness of "Henry and June" almost as much.
It's nice to take a break from sheer exhaustive indulgence and get a muted picture of our animal lustiness sometimes. Gives us a bit of perspective. But again, thanks for the detailed and deep discussion, Nerve. --TRB 08/22 |
