Reader Feedback on "Young Love"
The article calls Barrie "sexless" for sleeping in another room than his wife. Back in those days though, men and women slept in different beds, and often in different rooms as well.
The portrayal of this fact in the movie doesn't illustrate anything about Barries desires, but rather was shown to give the viewer a good idea of the moral standards of the time. --jfs 12/06 |

Good critic!
But i was wondering...what happened to Elizabet Wurtzel 's column about movies you started to publish last year? Did she OD? --FV 12/05 |
Who is the previous reader referring to when he says "Dana Young?" This fine film review seems to be authored by "Dana Stevens." Are we all on the same page? --ss 12/04 |
Dana Young is right to notice that 'There's a big gray zone between loving children with high-minded, angelic purity and being an outright pedophile, but this is territory the movie chooses not to explore' and it is perhaps time there was some focus on this in the media rather than a naive or sensationalized, polarizing approach that too often happens.
However, to defend Forster's film, it's not meant to be about childhood sexuality: Barrie's dismissal of rumors about his motivation in befriending them is, I think, a response to the many who have tried to claim Barrie was indecently motivated - a claim that there is no evidence for. To call the film a failure for not approaching this subject is like taking Ocean's Eleven to task for not considering how we can solve the problem of organized crime: the film chooses not to address this subject.
Finding Neverland has its moments of weakness, but in general it's a thought-provoking film about what it means to become an adult or, as Barrie does, to resist that. Of course, it would be possible to write a very different film using the same material, as Young seems to want, but the original playwright and the director have other topics to explore.
